Guide to Buying a Pressure Cooker for Home Use
Nowadays, you can get a pressure cooker from just about any seller who deals with kitchen wares. There is quite a wide variety available, which can make choosing the right one for your home a bit of a challenge. Some of the considerations to make, which will make you get the most suitable ones are highlighted below.
Electric or Stovetop Pressure Cookers
Electric pressure cookers and stovetop pressure cookers are the two main types available in the market.
Electric Pressure Cookers
The electric ones are fitted with heating elements which provide enough heat for cooking when powered by electricity. A majority of them are designed to be multi-cookers. This means that you can also use them as steamers, slow cookers or rice cookers. You can set a timer for the cooker to switch off power automatically such that you do not to be present to monitor your food. A disadvantage of the electrical type is that they may have many features that it becomes a bit complicated to use.
Stovetop Pressure Cookers
The stovetop types are designed to use heat from a burner in a similar way as any other pot would. An advantage of this is that it allows you to control the cooking process a little better compared to the electric models. For example, you can run cold water on the cooker to reduce the amount of time it takes to depressurize. They can also heat up to temperatures that are much higher compared the electric models, which further reduce cooking time.
The models and sizes of instant pot you choose will depend on the quantity of food that you will be cooking in it. Choose a pressure cooker that is large enough to fit all the food so as to avoid having to cook in batches. The cooker should also not be too big as it will take up more time and energy to heat up to required temperature levels.
The most common materials used to make pressure cookers are stainless steel and aluminum. The aluminum ones are lighter in weight and quite affordable but are more prone to damage and cannot reach very high-pressure levels. The stainless steel cookers are more durable and do not affect the flavor of food. The only disadvantage that they have is that they are expensive.
The more pressure settings a cooker has, the better. This is because more settings give you more control over how to cook your food. Make sure to choose one that has a minimum of two pressure settings.
